Dr. Cook is the director of the Intracoastal Dental Study Club, which is a member of Seattle Study Club, an international organization committed to advancing its members' knowledge to provide excellent care to every patient who comes through their doors.
The organization offers more than 32 hours of continuing education per year to dentists in the community through seminars. Dr. Cook is also a member of two SPEAR Study Clubs. He meets and teaches his colleagues and spends more than 10 hours per week outside of his office acquiring more knowledge in dentistry to apply to his patients and fellow dentists.
Seattle Study Club
Developed by Dr. Michael Cohen over 15 years and based on a model he still uses in his own practice, Seattle Study Club today comprises more than 250 specialists around the world, each with their own affiliated study club. These doctors and their members are dedicated to advancing team treatment planning and total case management as the ultimate tool for achieving ideal comprehensive care.
Often described as a "University Without Walls," the club's approach rests on three core principles:
- Total case management. Neither ideal learning nor ideal dentistry comes from random exposure to individual techniques — even state-of-the-art ones. The best results come from understanding the "big picture" and the role any given technique plays within it.
- Participation over observation. We learn more by doing than by watching. Through hands-on clinical sessions, members sharpen their treatment planning skills and learn to bring an "expert's" touch to the cases they treat every day.
- Learning alongside peers. A structured, supportive peer environment is the most effective way to master the challenges of the profession, through a curriculum spanning clinical, didactic, and academic learning.
Members also have access to an advisory board of skilled, experienced clinicians — a resource unique to the Seattle Study Club environment. The board provides troubleshooting for difficult clinical situations, pre-treatment consultations on selected cases, one-to-one mentoring, and lectures on basic and advanced treatment planning principles, current literature, and case reviews.
